Press Release
INDIANAPOLIS—Marian College today announced the largest enrollment in its history as the college begins its 70th academic year in Indianapolis with 1,770 students registered for the fall semester 2006. The student population has grown 40 percent in five years. Among the highlights:
· 1,770 students enrolled, including full- and part-time traditional students and students enrolled in Marian’s Adult Programs (MAP)—a nearly 5.5 percent increase over last year
· 40 percent increase since 2001, when enrollment was 1,260 students
· Largest-ever freshman class of 270 students
· Record number of new transfers, with 139 students (compared with 74 in 2005)
The start of Marian College’s 2006-2007 academic year also marks a milestone for college president Daniel J. Elsener, who is celebrating his fifth year at the helm. In addition to the record growth of student enrollment, Elsener, the Board of Trustees, and the leadership team have also overseen five years of academic and fundraising success.
Among the milestones:
Development of a strong leadership team, including the hiring of the college’s first provost, Tom Enneking, and first full-time athletic director, Joe Haklin.
Development of several new academic initiatives, including the “Rebuild My Church” program, Center for Ethics in Business and the Professions, and the Business of Motorsports minor—the first program of its kind in the Midwest.
Growth of annual giving from just under $2 million in the 2001-02 fiscal year to nearly $10 million in the 2005-06 fiscal year; creation of the first endowed chair—The Jerry and Rosemary Semler Endowed Chair in Ethics; and creation of the largest single scholarship funded by an individual—the Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter Memorial Endowed Scholarship.
Strengthened partnerships with business and community organizations including Indianapolis Civic Theatre and Indiana Motorsports Association, both of which are located on campus; the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, which located its Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary at Marian College; and Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce through its “Education Plus” scholarship program.
”The 2006 enrollment numbers reflect the hard work and concentrated effort that our faculty and staff have invested,” said Daniel J. Elsener, president of Marian College. “Marian College created a strategic plan for growth five years ago that called for more involvement and service to the larger Indianapolis community and it is obvious from the results that it is working very well,” he continued.
